For Parents

The Parent Process

Understanding what to expect during your child's play therapy journey helps you support their growth every step of the way.

Consistency Matters

Weekly Sessions

Children attend therapy once per week, on the same day and time whenever possible. Consistency is important for building the therapeutic relationship and maximizing progress.

Each visit includes:

50 minutes in the playroom

Uninterrupted time for your child to engage in therapeutic play.

Transition time before and after

Brief check-in and wrap-up to ease transitions.

Parents wait in the lobby or car while the child meets with the therapist. This separation allows children to have their own private therapeutic space.

Timeline

Length of Treatment

Most children move through the play therapy process over approximately 36-40 weekly sessions. This timeline allows for the deep, lasting change that comes from processing emotions at the child's own pace.

Some children may complete the process sooner, while others may need more time depending on their individual needs and circumstances. We discuss progress and timeline during regular parent consultations.

Typical duration: 36-40 weeks
The Journey

The Four Phases of Play Therapy

Children typically move through four distinct phases during their play therapy journey.

01

Initiation Phase

Building Trust

In the beginning, your child explores the playroom and begins building a trusting relationship with the therapist. They may test boundaries and become familiar with the unique therapeutic environment.

02

Resistance Phase

Feeling Safe

As children begin to feel safe, they may start to approach more difficult emotions or experiences. Some resistance or testing of limits is normal and healthy during this phase.

03

Work Phase

Deep Healing

This is where significant therapeutic progress often occurs. Children work through challenging emotions, develop new coping skills, and make meaningful changes in how they relate to themselves and others.

04

Termination Phase

Growing Forward

As therapy nears completion, we prepare your child for the transition. They consolidate their gains and develop confidence in their ability to handle challenges independently.

Parent Consultations

Every five sessions, I schedule a parent consultation to discuss your child's progress. These meetings are essential for keeping you informed and providing strategies for supporting your child at home.

While I maintain your child's confidentiality regarding specific details of their play, I share general themes and patterns I observe. This helps you understand your child's emotional world and respond supportively.

Ready to Begin?

The first step is a parent consultation where we discuss your child's needs and determine if play therapy is the right fit.
